About Queenstown
The international resort town of Queenstown is in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu, which can be easily located on a map with its shape of a staggered lightning bolt. It’s a glacial formed lake though Maori mythology tells another story. (The story is revealed on our 2 & 3hr Queenstown tours).
Early Europeans first reached the area in 1860 to establish a high county sheep farm. Their peaceful lifestyle was short lived once gold was discovered in a couple of Queenstown rivers in 1862. It is believed to be named Queenstown after a local digger exclaimed that the town was “fit for Queen Victoria”.
Some time after the gold rush died off, the town re-emerged as a popular holiday destination for visitors from all over the world. The selection of Queenstown tours and activities are plentiful to keep you entertained during the day and the vibrant nightlife can see you through into the night.
With over 150 great eateries to choose from, there is no shortage of options when it comes to meal times too. A wonderful mix of cultures and nationalities provide menu options to suit everyone regardless of your taste and budget.
